We have another big trip this year – this one is a road trip down the West Coast to see Crater Lake, Lassen Volcanic, and the Redwoods. Katie and I have been to Crater Lake before but this will be our first “official” visit. Neither of us have been to the other two – in fact, I have never even stepped foot in California! Here’s the plan . . .
We’re heading out from home so we get the comfort of our own van and are going to tent camp all of it (with the exception of the last night in a Portland hotel). We have reservations for 2 nights at Mazama Campground in Crater Lake, 3 nights at Manzanita Lake Campground in Lassen, and 3 nights at Gold Bluffs Campground in the Redwoods.
Day 1: Ten hours of driving to Crater Lake NP!
Day 2: Wizard Island Boat Shuttle.
Day 3: Maybe do the Fire Lookout Hike. Four hours of driving to Lassen Volcanic NP with a break at Klamath Falls.
Day 4: Hike Bumpass Hell.
Day 5: Rest day, hang out at the lake.
Day 6: Almost five hours of driving to Redwood NP.
Day 7: Hike to Tall Trees Grove.
Day 8: Hike Fern Canyon in the morning, see the grove near Prairie Creek Visitor Center in the afternoon.
Day 9: Seven hours of driving to Portland with possible breaks at Enderts Beach Rd and/or Stout Grove.
Day 10: About six hours of driving back home with a stop for an annual family gathering of Katie’s side of the family.
